In Memory

  by Larry Jelinek, Gingerhill Cattery

Loss and grief of loved ones has comfort in our Christian tradition which through God's holy word the Bible, assures us that those who have died in Christ Jesus shall be taken to heaven in spirit and shall receive spiritual bodies at the resurrection to dwell on the new earth (Rev 21:1-4, I Cor 15:35-58, John 11:25-26).

What of God's creation; what sort of promises are found for his creatures. In the very beginning God made a covenant with Noah's family as well as every living creature (Gen 9:8-17). God's unconditional love for His creation is shown throughout scripture particularly in the Psalms (Psa 104 and 148, 84:3-4 also Matt 10:29). All creation shall see the salvation of God (Luke 3:6). As St. Paul writes in Romans 8:19-23, all creation waits eagerly to be set free from death to become imperishable and have eternal life.

God created all things for His pleasure and created an earth full of His creatures. Heaven and the new earth would not be complete without His creatures and we are given a glimpse of this heavenly place in Isaiah 11:6-9 where it is written that there is a peace and harmony where the lion shall lie down with the lamb. John in his vision of the revelation (Rev 5:13), saw all God's creation before the heavenly throne, I quote, "and I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all therein, saying: To Him who sits upon the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for ever and ever, Amen."

Through these scriptures I feel confident and comforted knowing that my feline friends who passed on to new life in heaven are healed and cared for, and as a Christian in Christ Jesus I look forward to our reunion.

Lend Me a Kitten

I will lend to you for awhile a kitten, God said. For you to love while he lives, and mourn when he's dead. Maybe for twelve or fourteen years, or maybe two or three. But will you, 'till I call him back, take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you and, should his stay be brief You'll always have his memories as solace for your grief. I cannot promise he will stay, since all from earth return. But there are lessons taught below I want this kitten to learn.

I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true. And from the folk that crowds life's land I have chosen you. Now will you give him all your love, nor think the labor vain? Nor hate me when I come to take my kitten home again?

I fancied that I heard them say 'Dear Lord Thy Will Be Done' For all the joys this kitten brings the risk of grief we'll run. We'll shelter him with tenderness, we'll love him while we may. And for the happiness we've known, forever grateful stay.

But should you call him back much sooner than we planned, We'll brave the bitter grief that comes, and try to understand. If, by our love we've managed your wishes to achieve, Then in memory of him whom we loved, please help us while we grieve. When our cherished kitten departs this world of strife, Please send yet another needing soul for us to love all his life.
